The Palamidi Fortress is perched on one of the two hills that guard the beautiful city of Nafplio. It offers spectacular views of the Aegean Sea, but also of the mountain ranges in the area. The fortress is very well preserved, being coveted, built and conquered for two centuries by Venetians and Ottomans, until the independence of modern Greece.
To get up to the fortress, you have to climb almost 1000 steps, which takes approx. 20 minutes at a brisk pace, or 10 minutes if you climb at a brisk pace. For the more comfortable there is also an access road by camper or car to the entrance to the fortress where there is a parking lot where coaches return with tourists.
We recommend that you visit the fortress early in the morning in the cool. After 11.00 AM, both the fortress and the parking lot are crowded. In the first picture you can see the huge parking lot in the port that fills up until noon. It is free and you can stay overnight in parking without shade or utilities if you do not want to go to a nearby campsite. From the port car park you can reach the historic center of Nafplio in a maximum of 5 minutes on foot.
