Corvin Castle – a sample of Gothic architecture in Romania

TzubyCAMPERS Romania Corvin Castle – a sample of Gothic architecture in Romania

Corvin Castle, also called Huniazilor Castle is the medieval fortress of Hunedoara, one of the most important monuments of Gothic architecture in Romania. Corvin Castle is the largest dual-function medieval building (civil and military) that can be visited in Romania.

The castle was built in the 15th century by Iancu de Hunedoara on the site of an old fortification. The castle has towers and bastions and today is restored and turned into a museum. The construction served Iancu de Hunedoara both as a fortified strategic point and as a feudal residence.

Over the centuries, the castle has been enriched with towers, halls and rooms of honor. The last defense tower (the “Ne boisa” tower = Don’t be afraid), as well as the Capistrano Tower (after the name of Ioan de Capistrano, a famous Franciscan monk) are some of the most significant parts of the building.
