When we decided to explore the Bordeaux area, we marked Dune du Pilat as a “must”. Dune du Pilat is the tallest sand dune in Europe, reaching heights of around 110 meters. It stretches approximately 2.7 kilometers in length and half of kilometer in width, making it a natural wonder that is constantly shifting and evolving due to wind and tides. Dune du Pilat is a truly unique experience in Europe.
Climbing the dune is a fun and unique activity for adults and children alike. We decided to have a picnic on the top of the dunes and it proved to be a great idea and a wonderful experience, the dune and nearby beaches provide a perfect setting for relaxation. Despite its popularity, the vastness of the dune allows for moments of solitude and reflection. The sweeping views and the sound of the wind and waves create a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
Whether you hike, run, or simply stroll to the top, it’s a rewarding experience with a stunning payoff. The contrasting landscapes of golden sand, deep blue ocean, and green forest create perfect conditions to learn and talk to your children about coastal ecosystems and the natural history of the region.
Dune du Pilat is relatively easy to access, located just a short drive from Bordeaux. We decided to park our camper in the official parking lot which has time limitations but there is also an option to go further south where there is a motorhome area and a campsite in case you decide to enjoy this amazing destination for a longer period of time.
Dune du Pilat’s combination of natural beauty, ecological significance and recreational opportunities makes it a truly amazing destination, one that we promised ourselves to come back to next time we are in the area.
