TzubyCAMPERS Portugal Journey to the Edge of Europe: Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca), Portugal

Today, we’re venturing to the breathtaking #CabodaRoca, the westernmost point of mainland #Europe. Traveling in our #campervan, we embraced the freedom of the open road, navigating the scenic coastline from Cascais to this iconic destination. Let’s hit the road and discover the magic of Cabo da Roca – #Portugal – together!

Starting from the coastal charm of Cascais, we continued our #portugaladventures to Cabo da Roca—a place that, in ancient times, was thought to be the edge of the known world. Shrouded in myth and mystery, this dramatic cliffside destination is crowned by a monument inscribed with the immortal words of Portugal’s literary icon, Luís de Camões: “Where the land ends and the sea begins.”

We parked near the historic lighthouse, its vivid red dome standing tall since 1772, a steadfast beacon for sailors navigating the Atlantic’s unpredictable waters. As the salty breeze kissed our faces, we brewed coffee, savoring each sip while watching seabirds trace elegant arcs above the endless blue expanse.

The parking area, though accommodating to campervans, can fill quickly, especially on weekends. Arriving early or later in the afternoon offers the best chance of finding a spot. For those planning a meal on-site, the visitor center includes a café, but bringing your own food adds flexibility. A picnic overlooking the ocean is an unforgettable experience—but remember to respect trash disposal rules to preserve the pristine landscape.

On foot, we explored trails that wind along the cliffs, offering breathtaking views and a palpable connection to the Age of Discovery. These shores were once the starting point for Portuguese explorers venturing into uncharted waters. Cabo da Roca remains a living symbol of that adventurous spirit. However, the cliffs are steep and winds strong, so you should ensure children remain safely on marked paths. Good walking shoes are a must for any trail exploration, particularly the path leading to Praia da Ursa, a hidden gem nestled nearby.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, it painted the sky with vivid hues of gold and crimson—a breathtaking farewell to the day. We returned to our campervan, hearts brimming with awe and gratitude. Cabo da Roca is more than just a geographical point; it’s a profound encounter with Portugal’s soul and a celebration of the raw beauty found at the edges of Europe.
