Founded in the sixth century, Montepulciano is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Tuscany.

Overlooking the Val d’Orcia on one side, and the Val di Chiana on the other, the town was constantly fought over by the Florentines and the Sienese until 1202, when the inhabitants chose Florence as their protectorate.

Montepulciano is most famous for its historical town center with beautiful piazzas, churches and terraces with breathtaking views over the countryside, the birthplace of Poliziano (born Angelo Ambrogini) – one of the Renaissance’s most celebrated lyrical poets, and its worldwide known “vino nòbile di Montepulciano”, one of the first wines with an origin guaranteed by the Italian Government.

Entrance to the old city is restricted (ZTL area – steep fines applied) but there are several options for parking around the city, including a free camper parking.
