We’ve packed up our #campervan and hit the road to explore this charming coastal town, known as Europe’s surf capital. Ericeira is one of just 12 World Surfing Reserves globally and the only one in Europe. Its coastline is world-famous for its waves, drawing surfers from across the globe. For families, this means plenty of opportunities for everyone to enjoy the water, whether you’re a seasoned surfer or just dipping your toes in. We found Praia dos Pescadores to be a family favorite – a sheltered beach with calm waters, perfect for younger children to splash around safely. For older kids and parents ready to try surfing, Praia do Sul and Ribeira d’Ilhas are great spots with surf schools and rental facilities. Even if surfing isn’t on your agenda, simply watching the pros take on the waves from the shore is a treat in itself.
The town of Ericeira is as captivating as its beaches. Walking through its cobblestone streets, we discovered a vibrant mix of local culture and charm. Restaurants serve up fresh seafood like grilled sardines, octopus rice, and hearty shellfish stews – dishes that delighted both us and the kids. For a sweet treat, the gelato shops are a huge hit!
Traveling by campervan made this trip even more special. It allowed us the freedom to explore at our own pace, making spontaneous stops at scenic viewpoints and quiet beaches along the way. When packing, flexibility is key. Layers are essential as the coastal weather can change quickly – sunny mornings often give way to breezy afternoons.
One of our favorite moments in Ericeira is watching the sunsets. The cliffs overlooking the Atlantic provide a spectacular vantage point, and the combination of the ocean, golden light, and peaceful atmosphere made it unforgettable.
