TzubyCAMPERS Portugal Immersing in a Medieval Experience: Óbidos, Portugal

Welcome to #Óbidos, #Portugal – a town where history, charm, and adventure come to life! In today’s vlog, we’re taking you on an unforgettable journey through this magical place. From exploring ancient castle walls to wandering narrow, flower-lined streets, you’ll see why Óbidos is one of Portugal’s most captivating destinations. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this whirlwind tour of one of Europe’s most enchanting medieval towns!

Óbidos, located just over an hour’s drive north of Lisbon, was the perfect family-friendly stop on our campervan road trip through central Portugal. While vehicles aren’t allowed inside the walled city, we found ample parking options nearby, with the Praça de Estacionamento, just outside the walls, being the most convenient spot for campervans.

This charming town has a rich history that captivated all of us. Originally settled by the Celts, Óbidos became a Roman outpost before being fortified by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1148, Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, reclaimed the town, and its strategic hilltop location made it an important defensive stronghold. Today, the intact medieval walls, cobblestone streets, and the magnificent castle make Óbidos one of Portugal’s most treasured historical sites.

Exploring Óbidos on foot was a highlight for our family. The kids loved climbing the #medieval walls (with supervision!) for breathtaking views of the town and the surrounding countryside. We wandered down the bustling Rua Direita, the main street, which is lined with shops selling local crafts, #ginjinha (the famous cherry liqueur), and regional treats. The quiet alleys were equally enchanting, with vibrant flowers, historic churches, and peaceful courtyards offering surprises around every corner.

Óbidos is magical year-round, but for an extra special experience, visit during the Óbidos Medieval Market in July, when the town comes alive with jousting, medieval costumes, and traditional food. Whether you’re exploring its medieval walls, indulging in local treats, or soaking in the magical atmosphere, this enchanting town is a must-visit destination on any Portuguese road trip.
