What was once reserved only for experienced climbers, has now become accessible from the construction of the Grossglockner Alpine Road, opened in 1935.
Exhibitions and museums, mountain huts and inns, visitor centers and information points are concentrated in this area which offers a unique mountain experience and 48 kilometers of fascinating road ascent, being able to reach by car or camper up to 2504m.
The growing number of visitors has made the modernization of the road a priority, its width being increased from 7.5 to 15 meters, reaching to be transited annually by approx. 350,000 vehicles. The car park has also been expanded to a capacity of 4,000 spaces.
Each kilometer and each of the 36 turns of the Grossglockner alpine road is a delight and the destination is family friendly. Children will learn a lot about road construction and alpine vegetation at the four themed playgrounds.
Our recommendation would be to buy your ticket online before starting the trip, so that you benefit from a 10 to 15% discount in all the shops along the route.
The Grossglockner Alpine Road is normally open from the beginning of May to the end of October and there are several camping facilities in the area.
